Leading an authentic life – Introducing Samer Doumet
With the launch of Authenticite Talent, our internal talent agency, we’re excited to represent pioneering talent in the industry. As part of this month’s feature highlight, we speak to Samer Doumet about everything that makes him tick as a content curator in the music sphere. The roles that Samer Doumet played in eight years as a creative industry professional have been as varied as the cultural spaces have played.
Whether as a thriving performing artist or as the creative mastermind driving well-received advertising campaigns across MENA, throughout his career, he continues to use music to connect the dots along my career path, which now brings him to lead editorial in the Middle East and North Africa for Apple Music. Overseeing music editorial & artists/label relations for 14 Arabic markets based in Dubai. We sit down with Samer and find out exactly what he thinks of the current cultural landscape and what steps we need to take in order to move it to the next level.
What is your opinion on the current cultural landscape in the KSA?
The cultural landscape in Saudi Arabia is not a piece of new news. For the longest time, Saudis enjoyed and savoured culture in all its forms, from music to design to fine arts, etc. The only change is that more platforms are now available: events, biennales, galleries, and festivals are being constructed and branded to embrace, promote and feature what the kingdom has had for years. Cultural engineering won’t just benefit the locals but will affect the entire Arab nations as the centres of influence are shifting.
What steps must we take to improve artist exposure on a global scale?
The answer to this one has many layers. There is work to be done by local artists who need to be more agile and proactive and treat their artistry like any other entrepreneur. Embrace their culture and be confident of finding their sound and identity.Luring more international music outlets, from labels to booking agents, to be based in the kingdom and bring their international standard to know-how, helping to build professional work frames and the proper support for the talent to develop their careers. Putting in place the proper legislation and building the right infrastructure to make the music business profitable for talents and business owners so we would eventually become an industry, as artists need to monetise to survive and keep creating and entertaining.
